Champion Bay Senior High School wins 2019 Midwest Science and Engineering Challenge

Champion Bay Senior High School students have won the 2019 Midwest Science and Engineering Challenge. This year has seen the first group of Year 10 students to be enrolled at the school.

More than fifty Year 9 and 10 CBSHS students met teams from seven other Mid West schools in a battle of science, mathematic and design skills, at host school Geraldton Grammar School last week.

CBSHS Team A achieved the highest over all score for their performance in a range of activities including plotting efficient transport routes, building a robotic hand and designing the most efficient electrical circuit.

STEAM Coordinator, Hollie Roberts was excited to take Year 10’s for the first time this year.

“In the past we sent teams as John Willcock College, and came close to winning, but because we were a middle school we could only send Year nines,” Ms Roberts said.

‘The Challenge is great opportunity for students to meet similarly minded others. It is also an opportunity for them to take intellectual risks in a safe and supportive environment.”

Year 10 student Erica McCarthy was part of the winning team. She said spending time with friends working together in a group was enjoyable.

“The best part was seeing the accomplishment the team had with the bridge building, it was made completely out of tape, popsicles and straws and held four Gold Ingots,” she said.

The Science and Engineering Challenge is a nation wide outreach program, provided by the University of Newcastle, that aims to encourage students to take up a career in science and engineering.
